Icebreaker Activities for Millennials

Conversation Starters- Pose a silly question to each person in the group: Favorite candy as a child? What did you want to be when you grew up? Favorite “guilty pleasure” TV Show? For informal social functions, write the answer on your nametag or on an index card taped to your shirt.

Social Media- Read out your most recent social media post.

Ask Siri– Get out your phones and research an answer to a question that has crossed your mind lately. Read the question and “search results” out loud. Examples: How much is a 2016 Corvette? Who won the Super Bowl last year? What happened in the season finale of ___________?

Memory Name Game– Each person says his or her first name with an adjective in front of it.  At the end of the intros, ask a few brave souls to go around the room and attempt to remember each person’s adjective-name combo.  Example: Energetic Emily, Celestial Celeste.

10 Year Old Talent – Participants say their names and fill in the blank to the following sentence: “When I was 10 Years old, I was an expert _________.” (Example: I was an expert speed speller, candy bar eater, cartoon picture doodler, video gamer, dog pooper-scooper.)

Personal Scavenger Hunt– Write three qualities, or life accomplishments on sheets of paper, making them all different. Distribute one to each person.  Everyone has to mingle and put someone’s name by each of the three items.  Example: 1.) This person is going to use their passport within the next six months. 2.) This person is a Dallas Cowboys fan. 3.) This person would rather read a book than go out for the evening. Share results.

Learning Strategies to Engage Millennials

Millennials choose to learn in new and different ways. Context is more important than content. Context requires more data than just your own; it is broad. However, learners can see results in a broader content. Content, on the other hand, requires only your own data, and is focused. Most millennials rely on social media and Google to access information, share knowledge, ideas, insights, discuss challenges, and receive advice and feedback.  It is important to build and develop training content as well as a learning environment that includes technology and methodologies of informal learning and collaborative learning. This enable learners to collaborate, and work, in groups to build an active learning community.

Strategies to engage millennials include:

  • Providing introductory topics to familiarize learners with what they will learn about.
  • Providing learners opportunities to think, rethink, and self-evaluate their understanding through written exercises.
  • Including reflective, open-ended questions so learners can build on their knowledge.
  • Offering opportunities for learners to express their thoughts, opinions, and ideas.
  • Offer a variety of learning styles and methods throughout the course content.
  • Provide information in short increments.
  • Providing learners with trending information (content that can be used in the “here and now”).
  • Providing learners with an expectation checklist or accountability tool.

Teachers & Cultural Diversity

Teachers overwhelmingly acknowledge the importance of diversity, and feel competent to address the diverse learning styles, abilities, and cultures of their learners. Adult educators typically feel more comfortable in the following four aspects of culturally inclusive teaching in classrooms:

  • Incorporating aspects of learners’ cultures and languages into instruction;
  • Modifying learning environments to accommodate the needs of special populations;
  • Implementing  instructional practices that address the needs of learners with diverse learning abilities and differences; and
  • Providing instruction to learners with diverse levels of cognitive and academic proficiencies.
